1. Acquire some skills. You must know how to build. This means you need carpentry skills. Yet, you need to know more than just how to hammer a nail.

 

2. Take some carpentry and building classes. You may also want to add some electrical, plumbing and design classes to your class load.

 

3. Learn on the job skills as you attend classes. If you can, try to find a part-time job as a carpenter's helper to get more hands-on experience.

 

4. Begin acquiring the tools you need.

 

5. Learn how to read floor plans. This may mean taking more classes.

 

6. Learn how to draw floor plans. Again, you may have to take more classes.

 

7. Learn how to figure out the costs of materials for a home based on floor plans. You may be able to acquire this skill during some of your previous schooling.
